This week Amex released 2 new Amex Offers for Hilton properties. One is for a $50 statement credit when you spend $250 or more at any Hilton-, Curio-, or Canopy-branded property in the United States. (There is also a version offering 5,000 Amex Membership Rewards points with $250 or more in spend.) The other is for a $100 statement credit when you spend $500 at any Hilton portfolio property in the UK. Both are very good offers if you have an upcoming stay at a qualifying property.
Details of Hilton/Curio/Canopy US Offer
To redeem the Hilton/Curio/Canopy US Amex Offer, spend $250 or more at any Hilton-branded, Curio Collection, or Canopy-branded property in the United States, and get a $50 statement credit. This offer expires on 9/5/2018.
This offer applies only to properties bearing the Hilton, Curio Collection or Canopy brands. It does not apply to other Hilton-portfolio brands such as Hilton Garden Inn, Conrad, Waldorf Astoria, DoubleTree, Embassy Suites and Hampton Inn.
This offer states that reservations must be made either (a) online at hilton.com, curiocollection.com, or canopybyhilton.com, (b) via the Hilton Honors app, or (c) by calling the hotel’s reservation lines at 1-800-445-8667 (Hilton), 1-844-442-8746 (Curio), or 1-844-654-4529 (Canopy). The offer also states that Advance Purchase rates and Non-Refundable rates are not eligible.
Full terms and conditions are as follows:
There is another version of this offer that will award 5,000 Amex Membership Rewards points with $250 or more in spend. We received this version of the Offer on only one card, a Business Platinum card. (Interestingly, we received the statement-credit version on our other Business Platinum card.) All other terms and conditions of the MR version of the offer are the same as the statement-credit version.
We generally prefer the MR version of the offer to the statement-credit version, as we would prefer 5,000 MR points to the $50 credit. That is, we value the MR points at more than 1 cent per point. We can easily get more than 1.5 cents per point in value by redeeming MR points for paid airfare, with our 35% rebate from holding the Business Platinum card. Also, readers who transfer MR points to Amex partner airlines should be able to achieve more than 1 cent per point of value fairly easily.
Details of Hilton UK Offer
To redeem the Hilton UK Amex Offer, spend $500 or more at any property within the Hilton portfolio in the United Kingdom, and get a $100 statement credit. This offer expires on 9/30/2018.
This offer applies to all UK properties in the Hilton portfolio of brands. I ran a quick search on hilton.com of UK properties, which came back with 152 locations. The results included properties in the following Hilton-affiliated brands:
- Curio Collection
- Hampton by Hilton
- Hilton Garden Inn
- Waldorf Astoria
This offer states that reservations must be made either online at hilton.com, via the Hilton Honors app, or by calling Hilton reservations at 1-800-445-8667. The offer also states that Advance Purchase rates and Non-Refundable rates are not eligible.
Full terms and conditions are as follows:
We did not receive any MR-earning version of this offer.
Observations and Strategies
As with all Amex offers, you must first add each of these offers to your Amex card and then use the same card to redeem the offer. The offer can be used only once on each eligible Amex card.
These Amex offers are somewhat targeted. We received both of these offers on all of our Amex cards other than our SPG co-branded cards (not surprising) and our Amex Hilton Honors Ascend cards. The fact that these offers did not appear on our Amex Hilton co-branded cards was surprising. We have received other Hilton-related Amex Offers on these cards in the past. And, the Offers would be most valuable when paired with an Amex Hilton co-branded card (particularly the Aspire and Ascend) as these cards earn well when used at Hilton properties (14 and 12 Hilton Honors points per dollar of spend, respectively).
You should be able to pay with multiple cards (split tender) at checkout, which may allow you to take advantage of these offers multiple times on single stays if your bill is high enough. For example, if your bill at a Hilton hotel in the US is $800, just tell the desk clerk that you’d like to put $250 on one of your Amex cards with the US offer, $250 on another, and the remaining $300 on yet another card. In this example, you’d get $50 statement credit times 3, for a total of $150 off, reducing your $800 stay down to $650!
(This is a little tricky with the Hilton UK offer, as you’ll be paying in GB pounds, and you won’t be exactly sure what the exchange rate will be. If you’re paying with multiple cards, just be sure to do the math carefully and make sure you put enough on each card to leave a little buffer to make sure you trigger the offer with at least $500 of spend on each card.)
On the US offer, if your bill is within $50 of $250, you’ll save money if you purchase something else to bring your total up to $250. For example, if your bill is $225, go to the hotel gift shop and buy something for $25 to bring the total to $250, then pay with your Amex card to trigger the credit. That way you’ll get your $25 item for “free” and pay only $200 total instead of $225. (The same holds true if your bill would be between $450 and $500, or between $700 and $750, and so forth.) This also holds true with the UK offer, except that the relevant range for buying something “extra” to trigger the offer would be $400 to $500 (or between $900 and $1,000, etc.)
For the Hilton US offer, there may be an option to buy a gift card to help trigger the offer, although this comes with a couple of caveats.
- Caveat One: I am not sure how widely Hilton gift cards are sold at Hilton properties. However, if Hilton GCs are available, you could do something like this – If your bill is $150, you could buy a $100 GC and charge it to your room folio, to bring the total to $250 and thereby trigger the offer
- Caveat Two: The express terms of the offers exclude gift card purchases. That said, I believe that if you are staying at a Hilton property and can purchase a physical GC on-site from the front desk, it would trigger the offer. I have done this successfully before, on a different Amex Offer for Hilton properties.
There is no requirement that the $250 (for the Hilton US offer) / $500 (for the Hilton UK offer) be from a single transaction on a single stay. Thus, for the US offer for example, two stays of $125 each should trigger the credit.
As always, be sure to add these Amex Offers to each card on which they appear. If you have multiple Amex cards on the same online account, be sure to use the “Duplicate Tab” trick so that you can add each offer to each card. If you don’t use the “Duplicate Tab” trick, you’ll only be able to add the offers to the first card on which you activate them.
We hope you can take advantage of one of both of these very good offers to get additional value out of your hotel stays this summer!
