Save Money on Hotels! Catching Up on 11 Current Amex Offers

Executive Summary

While we’ve been busy with the exciting launch of Middle Age Miles over the past 2 weeks, we’ve fallen a little behind on getting the news out to our readers about several good Amex Offers for hotels.  There are no fewer than eleven current Amex Offers that can save you money on your hotel stays over the next few months, and we’ll bring you up to date now:

  • Four Seasons Hotels – 15,000 MR points when you spend $750 (expires 10/10/2018)
  • Prepaid Hotels booked via AmexTravel.com – $100 statement credit when you spend $600 (exp. 10/12/18)
  • Kimpton Hotels – $60 statement credit when you spend $300 (exp. 10/14/18)
  • Marriott family of hotels – $60 statement credit when you spend $300 (exp. 10/25/18)
  • Hampton & Hilton Garden Inn – $30 statement credit when you spend $175 (exp. 10/31/18)
  • Peninsula Hotels (NYC & Beverly Hills) – $100 statement credit when you spend $500 (exp. 10/31/18)
  • Tripfuel.com (a Priceline company) – $50 statement credit when you spend $200 (exp. 11/14/18)
  • Embassy Suites/Homewood/Home2 Suites – $50 statement credit when you spend $250 (exp. 11/15/18)
  • InterContinental Hotels – $100 statement credit when you spend $500 (exp. 11/30/18)
  • Crowne Plaza Hotels – $50 statement credit when you spend $250 (exp. 11/30/18)
  • Caesars properties – $50 statement credit when you spend $250 (exp. 12/15/18)

Many of these offers also have a version offering Amex Membership Rewards points instead of a statement credit.

Reminder About Amex Offers in General

Most readers are well aware of Amex Offers, but let’s do a quick recap for new readers.

Amex Offers are special offers attached to your Amex cards.  You can find them if you scroll down to the bottom of your home page after logging in to an Amex online account.  You’ll want to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click “View All” to see all of your current Offers.  Each offer is listed with an “Add to Card” link to the right.  If you click the “>” arrow on the left, you can see the Details and Offer Terms for each offer.

Amex Offers are card-specific – that is, they are attached specifically to a particular Amex card.  Amex recently changed its rules so that you can add an Offer to only one Amex card per person.  Amex seems to enforce this limitation by social security number, so a single Amex Offer can only be added to one card associated with one social security number.  There are a few exceptions, such as the Marriott offer we will discuss below.

Most Amex Offers take the form of a certain amount of statement credit after a certain amount of spend.  Some Offers also have a version where you can earn a certain number of Amex Membership Rewards (MR) points if you spend at least a certain amount.  Generally, the number of MR points is 100x the amount of the statement credit.  For example, for an Offer that gives $50 in statement credit for $250 spend, the corresponding MR Offer would give 5,000 MR points if you spend at least $250.  MR-earning Offers can appear on any MR-earning Amex card; however, we most often see MR-earning Offers on Platinum cards.

Amex treats MR-earning Offers as different offers than corresponding “statement credit” offers, so it is possible to add a “statement credit” Offer to one of your cards and a corresponding MR-earning Offer to another card, if each type of Offer is available to you.

Whether you prefer a “statement credit” Offer or an MR-earning Offer depends on how you value MR points.  If you value MR points at more than 1 cent per point (and we do; given that we can redeem MR points for at least 1.54 cents per point of value for flights purchased through the Amex Travel Portal), then you should prefer the MR-earning Offer.

You must add the offer to your card first, and then use that same card in order to receive the statement credit or MR points (and satisfy all of Amex’s terms and conditions for the particular offer).  For the most part, Amex Offers for hotel properties are limited to properties in the United States (although we have seen some other location-specific Offers, such as for Hilton Properties in the UK or in Australia).

Details of the Offers

(1) Four Seasons Hotels

To redeem the current Four Seasons Amex Offer, spend at least $750 at a Four Seasons property in the United States, and receive 15,000 MR points.  This offer expires on 10/10/2018.

This Offer states that reservations must be made either (a) online at fourseasons.com; or (b) in-person.  All international hotels and websites are excluded.  The Offer also specifically excludes any service or amenity not charged to a room, third party bookings, Four Seasons Gift Cards purchased online, and Four Seasons eGift Card purchases.

We are not aware of any “statement credit” version of this offer.  Some bloggers suggested that there’s a “statement credit” version out there (for $150 credit), but I have not seen any actual photo with a “statement credit” Offer.

Despite the limitation in the terms of the Offer regarding how rooms must be booked, we wonder whether it would work to stack this Offer with Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) benefits by booking through the FHR site.  Many Four Seasons properties participate in FHR.

Full terms and conditions are as follows:

(2) Prepaid Hotels booked via AmexTravel.com

To redeem the current Amex Offer for prepaid hotels booked via AmexTravel.com, spend $600 or more on a single purchase for a prepaid hotel booking online at amextravel.com by 10/12/2018.

Note that for this Offer, you must spend at least $600 in a single transaction (whereas most Amex Offers can be satisfied through multiple transactions that add up to at least the spend threshold).  The Offer expressly includes Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) bookings.

On the bright side, this Offer can be used for hotels outside the US; however, the booking must be made on the US website, amextravel.com.

Note that the prepaid Amex Travel bookings that qualify for this offer are third-party bookings that will not qualify for elite points or nights in hotel loyalty programs, and elite benefits such as breakfast or room upgrades also probably will not be available.  This is a major downside to booking rooms through Amex Travel (or any other third party booking service such as Expedia, Booking.com, Priceline, Orbitz, etc.).

Full terms and conditions are as follows:

(3) Kimpton Hotels

To redeem the current Amex Offer for Kimpton Hotels, spend $300 or more at any Kimpton hotel in the United States, and get a $60 statement credit.  This offer expires on 10/14/2018.

This Offer states that reservations must be made (a) online at kimptonhotels.com; (b) via the mobile app; or (c) by calling 1-800-KIMPTON (546-7866).  It states that gift card purchases are not eligible; however, we do wonder if a physical gift card purchased at the hotel would actually qualify for the offer (especially if it is charged to a room during a stay).  (It appears that Kimpton still sells gift cards even though our recollection is that IHG generally does not.)

This Offer would stack with IHG’s current double-points promotion if the terms of both the Offer and the promotion are met (most notably, the stay should be at least your second IHG stay during the promotion period, with check-out on or before the Offer’s expiration date of 10/14/18).

We are not aware of a MR-earning version of this Offer.

Full terms and conditions are as follows:

(4) Marriott Family of Hotels

To redeem the current Amex Offer for the Marriott family of hotels, spend $300 or more at any Marriott portfolio property in the United States, and get a $60 statement credit.  The properties included in this offer are only legacy Marriott properties, not the former SPG family properties.  Thus, the Offer applies only to these specific brands: JW Marriott; Autograph Collection; Renaissance; Marriott; Delta; Gaylord; AC Hotels by Marriott; Courtyard; Residence Inn; SpringHill Suites; Fairfield Inn; TownePlace Suites; and Moxy Hotels.  Ritz-Carlton Hotels are also excluded from this Offer.  The offer expires on 10/25/2018.

This Offer states that reservations must be made (a) online at marriott.com; (b) via the Marriott Mobile App; or (c) by calling Marriott Worldwide Reservations at 888-236-2427.  It states that gift card purchases are not eligible; however, we have successfully redeemed similar Amex Offers for Marriott in the past by purchasing a physical gift card at the hotel front desk, even when we were not staying at the Marriott property.

This Offer would stack with Marriott’s upcoming Megabonus promotion if the terms of both the Offer and the promotion are met (most notably, the stay should be on or after the beginning of the promotion on 9/26/2018, with check-out on or before the Offer’s expiration date of 10/14/18).

One important quality of this Offer is that it can be added to multiple Amex cards of a single person (unlike most Amex Offers that are now limited to one card per person).  To register this Offer on multiple cards, use the link: http://americanexpress.com/marriottoffer.  (Hat Tip to FrequentMiler, FM reader David, and (as David put it in his comment on FM) a random guy on social media.)

We are not aware of a MR-earning version of this Offer.

Full terms and conditions of this Offer are as follows:

(5) Hampton & Hilton Garden Inn

To redeem the Hampton/HIlton Garden Inn Amex Offer, spend $175 or more at any Hampton by Hilton or Hilton Garden Inn property in the United States, and get a $30 statement credit.  This Offer expires on 10/31/2018.

This Offer applies only to Hampton and Hilton Garden Inn properties, and not any other Hilton-portfolio brands.

The Offer states that reservations must be made either (a) online at hampton.com or hiltongardeninn.com; (b) via the Hilton Honors App; or (c) by calling the hotel’s reservations lines at 1-800-445-8667 (Hampton) or 1-877-782-9444 (Hilton Garden Inn).  That said, we have successfully redeemed this offer when making reservations through Hilton’s main website at hilton.com.

The Offer states that Advance Purchase rates and Non-Refundable rates are not eligible.  It also states that gift card purchases are not eligible; however, we do wonder if a physical gift card purchased at the hotel would actually qualify for the offer.  We have successfully triggered Amex Offers for another brand in the Hilton portfolio by purchasing a physical gift card at the front desk.  However, we do not know if Hampton hotels or Garden Inns actually sell gift cards.

There is also a MR-earning version of this Offer that will award 3,000 Amex MR points with $175 or more in spend.  We actually prefer the MR-version of the Offer and have already redeemed it.

This Offer will stack with Hilton’s current Moments Made BIgger promotion (double points on Hampton and Garden Inn properties) if the terms of both the Offer and the promotion are met.  It should also stack with other Hilton-family promotions, like the current joint promotion with the Miles & More airline loyalty program or Hilton’s new-member promotion, assuming that the terms of all promotions are met.

Full terms and conditions are as follows:

(6) Peninsula Hotels (NYC & Beverly Hills)

To redeem this niche Offer, spend $500 or more at the Peninsula New York or the Peninsula Beverly Hills, and receive a $100 statement credit.

This Offer is quite limited in that it applies to only two properties, the Peninsula New York and the Peninsula Beverly Hills.  It expressly excludes the Peninsula Chicago and all other Peninsula properties.

The Offer states that reservations must be made (a) online at peninsula.com; or (b) by calling 1-866-382-8388.  It states that the Offer is only valid on room rate and room charges, and not for gift card purchases.  Again, we wonder whether a physical gift card purchased at the front desk of one of the two covered hotels would trigger the Offer – we suspect that it would, if the hotels actually sell physical gift cards on-site.

Despite the limitation in the terms of the Offer regarding how rooms must be booked, we wonder whether it would work to stack this Offer with Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) benefits by booking through the FHR site.  The Peninsula Beverly Hills participates in FHR (and looks quite beautiful, I might add), as does The Peninsula New York.

There is also a MR-earning version of this Offer that will award 10,000 Amex MR points with $500 or more in spend, which we prefer to the “statement credit” version.

Full terms and conditions are as follows:

(7) Tripfuel.com (a Priceline company)

To redeem the current Amex Offer for Tripfuel.com, spend $200 or more in one or more transactions online at tripfuel.com/amexoffer by 11/14/2018.

We were not familiar with Tripfuel.com before this Offer.  Tripfuel is a third-party booking site apparently owned by Priceline.  It appears to offer prepaid hotel rates at properties both in the US and abroad.

The terms of this Offer expressly require bookings to be made through a specific website, tripfuel.com/amexoffer.  It does appear that the Amex Offer can be used for hotels outside the US, as long as they are booked through this site.  Bookings through other related brands such as booking.com, priceline.com, and rocketmiles.com are expressly excluded from this Offer.

Note that prepaid hotel bookings through Tripfuel are third-party bookings that will not qualify for elite points or nights in hotel loyalty programs, and elite benefits such as breakfast or room upgrades also probably will not be available.  This is a major downside to booking rooms through any third party booking service.

We did a single spot-check to compare Tripfuel’s rates to booking direct with the hotel chain.  We semi-randomly chose a nice hotel in London for a two-night stay later this fall.  The Tripfuel rate, all-in including taxes and fees, was $1,098.63.  By comparison, the Marriott/SPG member rate for a pre-paid stay at the same hotel and on the same dates, converted at today’s exchange rate, was $1,021.68.  Tripfuel was more expensive (and by more than the $50 statement credit we’d receive).  Plus, as noted above, we’d receive points and elite benefits by booking direct through Marriott/SPG that we would not receive if we booked through Tripfuel.  On this random spot-check, Tripfuel is a very clear loser, even with the Amex Offer.  Perhaps there are some situations, probably at a lower-priced, non-chain boutique hotel where points and elite benefits wouldn’t come into play, where the Tripfuel Amex Offer could be useful.  But we’re not encouraged.

Full terms and conditions are as follows:

(8) Embassy Suites/Homewood/Home2 Suites

To redeem the Embassy Suites/Homewood/Home2 Suites Amex Offer, spend $250 or more at any Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites, or Home2 Suites property in the United States, and get a $50 statement credit.  This Offer expires on 11/15/2018.

This Offer applies only to Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites, or Home2 Suites properties, and not to any other Hilton-portfolio brands.

The Offer states that reservations must be made either (a) online at embassysuites.com, homewoodsuites.com, or home2suites.com; (b) via the Hilton Honors App; or (c) by calling the hotel’s reservations lines at 1-800-560-7782 (Embassy Suites) or 1-800-445-8667 (Homewood and Home2 Suites).  That said, we fully expect this offer to work if reservations are made through Hilton’s main website at hilton.com.

However, we do not know if Embassy/Homewood/Home2 Suites actually sell gift cards.

There is also a MR-earning version of this Offer that will award 5,000 Amex MR points with $250 or more in spend.  We would prefer the MR-version of the Offer to the “statement credit” version.

As with the Hampton/Hilton Garden Inn Offer we discussed above, this Offer will stack with Hilton’s current Moments Made BIgger promotion (double points on Hampton and Garden Inn properties) if the terms of both the Offer and the promotion are met.  It should also stack with other Hilton-family promotions, like the current joint promotion with the Miles & More airline loyalty program or Hilton’s new-member promotion, assuming that the terms of all promotions are met.

Full terms and conditions are as follows:

(9) InterContinental Hotels

To redeem the current Amex Offer for InterContinental Hotels, spend $500 or more at any InterContinental hotel in the United States, and get a $100 statement credit.  This offer expires on 11/30/2018.

This Offer states that reservations must be made (a) online at ihg.com/intercontinental; (b) via the mobile app; or (c) by calling 1-888-424-6857.  It excludes all other IHG family properties and also excludes the Palazzo and Venetian in Las Vegas.  The terms and conditions do not mention gift cards; our recollection is that IHG does not sell gift cards in the United States (although we could be mistaken).

This Offer would stack with IHG’s current double-points promotion if the terms of both the Offer and the promotion are met (most notably, the stay should be at least your second IHG stay during the promotion period, with check-out on or before the Offer’s expiration date of 11/30/18).

There is also a MR-earning version of this Offer that will award 10,000 Amex MR points with $500 or more in spend, which we prefer to the “statement credit” version.

Full terms and conditions are as follows:

(10) Crowne Plaza Hotels

To redeem the current Amex Offer for Crowne Plaza Hotels, spend $250 or more at any Crowne Plaza hotel in the United States, and get a $50 statement credit.  This offer expires on 11/30/2018.

This Offer states that reservations must be made (a) online at ihg.com/crowneplaza; (b) via the mobile app; or (c) by calling 1-888-227-6963.  It excludes all other IHG family properties.  The terms and conditions do not specifically mention gift cards (but do say that the Offer is only valid on room rate and room charges); our recollection is that IHG does not sell gift cards in the United States (although we could be mistaken).

As with the Kimpton and InterContinental Offers discussed above, this Offer would stack with IHG’s current double-points promotion if the terms of both the Offer and the promotion are met (most notably, the stay should be at least your second IHG stay during the promotion period, with check-out on or before the Offer’s expiration date of 11/30/18).

We are not aware of a MR-earning version of this Offer.

Full terms and conditions of this Offer are as follows:

(11) Caesars Entertainment Properties in Las Vegas

To redeem this current Las Vegas-specific Amex Offer for the hotels in the Caesars Entertainment family, spend $250 or more at the specific properties, and get a $50 statement credit.  The only properties included in this offer are these specific hotels: Caesars Palace; NOBU Hotel at Caesars Palace; Caesars Suites; Bally’s Law Vegas; The Cromwell; Flamingo Las Vegas; Harrah’s Las Vegas; LINQ Hotel & Casino; Paris Las Vegas; Planet Hollywood Resort; and Rio All-Suite Las Vegas.  The offer expires on 12/15/2018.

This Offer states that reservations must be made either (a) by phone, directly through Caesars Entertainment or the specified properties; (b) online at caesars.com or the individual property websites; or (c) via the mobile app.  The Offer states that it is only valid on room rate and room charges – but note that a lot of things can be charged to your room in Vegas, including show tickets and meals at other Caesars-affiliated properties.

There is also a MR-earning version of this Offer that will award 5,000 Amex MR points with $250 or more in spend, which we prefer to the “statement credit” version.

Full terms and conditions are as follows:
