Details & Analysis of the Promo

Marriott is back with another Megabonus promotion that runs from September 26, 2018, through January 31, 2019.  It’s good to see Marriott back in the game with a new promotion, after several promotion-less weeks while Marriott integrated the SPG loyalty program into Marriott Rewards.  The new Megabonus promotion isn’t the most inspiring and probably won’t motivate you to move stays from another chain to Marriott.  But we’re always grateful for extra points.

It’s also nice to see that Marriott has incorporated all of its properties into this new promotion, including Ritz-Carlton (which has generally been excluded from previous Marriott promotions) and the newly-integrated former Starwood properties.  And we see what Marriott is doing with the bonus-points-for-different-brands prong of this promotion, to raise awareness of its newly-integrated former Starwood brands and entice Marriott or SPG loyalists to try the brands of the other program.

Please sign up and don’t leave any points on the table!

This Marriott Megabonus promotion comes in two parts:

(1) For each stay of two nights or more at any Marriott family property during the promotion period, you earn 2,000 bonus Marriott Rewards points.  All Marriott family brands qualify for this promotion, including Ritz-Carlton and former Starwood properties.

(2) Earn 1,000 bonus Marriott Rewards points per Marriott family brand at which you stay, starting with the second brand at which you stay during the promotion period.  All 29 Marriott brands are eligible (including Ritz-Carlton and former Starwood properties), so you could theoretically earn up to 28,000 Marriott Rewards points under this prong of the promotion.

The two prongs of the promotion stack, so if you complete a two-night stay at your second different Marriott-family brand during the promotion, you should earn 3,000 bonus points.

Here is the description of the promotion from the Marriott sign-up page:

And here are the full terms and conditions of the promotion:

There are two things in the terms and conditions that we want to specifically point out.  One, note that only one room per hotel is counted toward a member’s stay requirements for the promotion.  Thus, if you book multiple rooms for the same 2 nights at a Marriott family hotel, you will receive only 2,000 bonus Marriott Rewards points (not 4,000).  Two, note that members electing to earn miles instead of Marriott Rewards points are not eligible for this promotion.  We’d generally suggest earning Marriott Rewards points instead of miles in any event, but you might want to double-check your profile to make sure you’ve selected Marriott Rewards points as your earning preference.  This can be found in your Marriott Rewards profile under Preferences/Earning Preferences.

What Is the Value of this Megabonus Promotion?

We give Marriott Rewards points a baseline value of 0.75 cents per point.  Thus, we value the 2,000 bonus points you’ll receive from a 2-night stay at $15.  Similarly, we value the 1,000 bonus points from staying at an additional Marriott brand at $7.50.

As we mentioned above, we’re happy for the promotion and the ability to earn some extra points, but none of this is really enough to change our behavior.  We prefer the current Hilton Honors double/triple points promotion, where all stays count (including 1-night stays that would be excluded by Marriott) and where we continue to earn more points as we spend more.
