Today we’re seeing three new Amex Offers for hotels that can save you money on your hotel stays over the next few months. We’ll also report on two other recent Offers that we didn’t write separate articles about, so you’ll be completely up to date. The new Amex Offers for hotels are:
- Luxury Collection hotels – $75 statement credit when you spend $375 (expires 1/31/2019)
- Hyatt Place & Hyatt House – $60 statement credit when you spend $200 (exp. 1/1/2019)
- MGM Resorts – $50 statement credit when you spend $250 (exp. 1/7/2019)
- La Quinta hotels – $20 statement credit when you spend $100 (exp. 12/31/2018)
- One Night app – $50 statement credit when you spend $250 (exp. 12/22/2018)

Details of the Offers
(1) Luxury Collection Hotels
Luxury Collection hotels are a group of Starwood-now-Marriott properties that were historically independent, boutique hotels, but are now under the Starwood/Marriott umbrella. To redeem the current Amex Offer for Luxury Collection hotels, spend at least $375 at a Luxury Collection property in the United States, and receive a $75 statement credit. This offer expires on 1/31/2019.
The offer states that reservations must be made (a) online at luxurycollection.com; (b) via the app (presumably the SPG app); or (c) by calling 1-800-325-3589. That said, I would fully expect that reservations made through marriott.com, spg.com, the Marriott app, or any Marriott or SPG reservations number would qualify for the offer.
This Offer would stack with Marriott’s current Megabonus promotion if the terms of both the Offer and the promotion are met. Note that the Megabonus promotion ends on 1/7/2019.
We are not aware of a Membership Rewards (MR)-earning version of this Offer.
We checked Marriott’s list of hotel properties, and we found only 17 Luxury Collection hotels in the United States. Although the list is short, the properties are very nice:
- Hotel Ivy, Minneapolis
- Hotel Talisa, Vail
- Las Alcobas, Napa Valley
- Palace Hotel, San Francisco
- Perry Lane Hotel, Savannah
- SLS Hotel, Beverly Hills
- The Ballantyne, Charlotte
- The Chatwal, New York City
- The Equinox, Vermont
- The Gwen, Chicago
- The Liberty, Boston
- The Nines, Portland
- The Phoenician (including Phoenician Residences and The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician), Scottsdale
- The Royal Hawaiian, Waikiki
- The St. Anthony, San Antonio
- The U.S. Grant, San Diego
- The Whitley, Atlanta
Middle Age Miles had a very nice stay at The Nines in Portland a couple of years ago, and we’d gladly return there.
Full terms and conditions of this Offer are as follows:
(2) Hyatt Place & Hyatt House (highly targeted)
To redeem the current Amex Offer for Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels, spend $200 or more at any Hyatt Place or Hyatt House in the United States, and get a $60 statement credit. This is a very valuable Offer that can be as much as a 30% discount if your bill comes to exactly $200. This Offer expires on 1/1/2019.
Reservations must be made directly with Hyatt, via (a) Hyatt.com; (b) the Hyatt mobile app; (c) a Hyatt hotel; or (d) a Hyatt call center. This Offer applies only to Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels, and not any other Hyatt-family brands.
The Offer states that gift card purchases are not eligible; however, we have successfully triggered Amex Offers for other hotels by purchasing a physical gift card at the front desk. We do not know if Hyatt Place or Hyatt House hotels actually sell gift cards.
We are not aware of a MR-earning version of this Offer.
This Offer will stack with Hyatt’s current Fall 2018 Bonus Points promotion, if the terms of both the Offer and the promotion are met. Note that Hyatt’s Fall 2018 Bonus Points promotion ends on 11/30/2018.
We believe that this Offer is highly targeted. We have a lot of Amex cards, and this Offer appeared only on our Amex EveryDay card.
Full terms and conditions of this Offer are as follows:
(3) MGM Resorts
To redeem this Amex Offer for MGM Resorts, spend $250 or more at one of the MGM properties that is included in the Offer, and get a $50 statement credit. The Offer expires on 1/7/2019.
This Offer is not limited solely to MGM’s properties in Las Vegas. The specific MGM Resorts properties that are included are:
- MGM Grand Las Vegas
- The Signature at MGM Grand
- Mandalay Bay
- Delano Las Vegas
- Park MGM
- NoMad Las Vegas
- The Mirage
- New York-New York
- Beau Rivage
- Gold Strike
- MGM National Harbor
- MGM Springfield
This Offer states that reservations must be made directly through MGM Resorts, either (a) online at mlife.com; (b) by phone; or (c) via mobile app. The Offer states that it is only valid on room rate and room charges – but note that a lot of things can be charged to your room in Vegas, including show tickets and meals at other MGM properties.
There is also a MR-earning version of this Offer that will award 5,000 Amex MR points with $250 or more in spend, which we prefer to the “statement credit” version.
Remember that stays at MGM hotels also qualify for points-earning and elite qualification stays and nights with World of Hyatt. Thus, if the terms of both the Offer and the promotions are met, this Offer will stack with Hyatt’s current Fall 2018 Bonus Points promotion. In addition, MGM and Hyatt are currently running a promotion for double Hyatt points on stays at MGM properties, through 12/29/2018. And, before you head to Vegas to stay at a MGM property, be sure to read our article, Vegas Prep and Tips – Maximizing Mlife and World of Hyatt Benefits, and follow our tips to take maximum advantage of the MGM/World of Hyatt partnership.
Full terms and conditions are as follows:
(4) La Quinta hotels
To redeem the current Amex Offer for La Quinta, spend $100 or more at any La Quinta hotel in the United States, and get a $20 statement credit. This Offer expires on 12/31/2018.
This Offer states that reservations must be made either (a) online at lq.com; (b) using the La Quinta mobile app; or (c) by phone at 1-800-753-3757. The Offer states that it is only valid on room rate and room charges and that gift card purchases are excluded.
This Offer may work particularly well, as many La Quinta hotels should be at or near the $100 price point for a one-night stay, which would trigger the statement credit.
We recently received an email offering double or triple points for stays at 55 specific La Quinta Hotels from October 8 through November 8, 2018. We’re not sure whether this is a publicly-available promotion or one that is only available to La Quinta Returns elite members. If you’d like to check out the participating hotels, the here is the link to the La Quinta Returns Bright Side Exclusives Double/Triple Points web page.
The full terms and conditions of the La Quinta Amex Offer are as follows:
(5) One Night App
To redeem the current Amex Offer for the One Night app, spend $250 or more in one or more transactions via the One Night app by 12/22/2018, and receive a $50 statement credit. The Offer is valid for US property bookings only.
We were not familiar with One Night before this Offer. One Night is a third-party booking site that seems to be similar to Hotel Tonight, It targets people making last-minute hotel bookings and promises discounted rates. One Night tries to differentiate itself from Hotel Tonight by focusing on “trendy” hotels. It appears to offer only same-day bookings starting at 3:00 pm each day.
It appears to currently offer hotel bookings in Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, London, Miami, Nashville, New York, New Orleans, Palm Springs, San Francisco, The Catskills, The Hamptons, and Washington, DC. Looking at our home area of Dallas, we see The Joule Hotel, the Crescent Court, the Rosewood Mansion, the Lorenzo Hotel, the Lumen, and some local NYLO hotels. This list would be consistent with One Night’s professed goal of including “trendy” hotels. We’re not able to compare rates at this time, as it’s earlier than 3:00 pm as we’re writing this article.
This Offer states that it is only valid on room rate and room charges, and that it excludes amenity spend. I’m not quite sure how to interpret this. My best guess is that only room rate plus taxes will be charged through the app, so those are the only charges that will be eligible to meet the spend requirement. I would expect that other room charges would be paid at the hotel itself and would not qualify toward this Offer.
One typical downside of booking hotels through a third-party app is that they will not qualify for elite points or nights in hotel loyalty programs, and elite benefits such as breakfast or room upgrades will not be available. On One Night, though, the properties we’re seeing in Dallas aren’t part of major chains. We note that the Joule is a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts and would thus be part of its iPrefer program. NYLO hotels also seem to have a loyalty program, but there are only 5 properties worldwide, 3 of which are in the Dallas area, so its loyalty program is limited. Thus, it may not matter much to book one of these hotels through a third-party site like One Night.

Additional Thoughts and Analysis
As far as we know, these Offers are subject to Amex’s recent one-Offer-per-person limitation. That said, if you have cards in multiple people’s names, you should be able to use the Offers multiple times for a single stay by splitting the payment at check-out. For example, Philly and I both have Amex cards with these Offers. If we had a Luxury Collection stay that cost more than $750, we could put at least $375 on my enrolled Amex card and another $375 or more on her enrolled Amex card, and thereby get 2 statement credits. In this example, you’d save $150 off a $750 stay, bring your total down to $600 and saving you 20%!
Also remember that if your bill is close to the spend threshold, you’ll save money if you purchase something else to bring your total up to an amount that will trigger the Offer. For example, if your bill at a Luxury Collection hotel would be $350, go to the hotel gift shop and buy something for $25 to bring your total to $375, then pay with your enrolled Amex card to trigger the credit. That way, you’ll get your $25 item for “free” and pay only $300 instead of $350.
Aside from the Hyatt Place/House Offer, all of these Offers appear to be widely targeted. We found each of the other 4 Offers on our Business Platinum, Business Rewards Gold, Blue Business Plus, Blue Business Plus AU, Blue for Business, personal Gold, EveryDay, and EveryDay AU cards. The only Amex cards where we did not find them were our SPG and Hilton co-branded cards (not surprisingly).
Also remember that there are current Amex Offers for other hotels, including Marriott-family hotels (expires soon on 10/25/2018), Hampton/Hilton Garden Inn, Peninsula New York & Beverly Hills, Embassy/Homewood/Home2 Suites, InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Caesars properties in Las Vegas, Waldorf Astoria/Conrad, and Hilton/Curio/Canopy properties.
