Multiple Amex Bonus Offers to Earn Hilton Honors Points on Co-Branded Cards

Amex Hilton Aspire card

Last week, we reported on a good targeted spend bonus that Amex offered on its co-branded Hilton Aspire and Ascend cards.  And now this week, Amex is back with even more offers to earn bonus Hilton Honors points.  We have received three more separate offers in the past 2 days on our Aspire or Ascend cards.  All of these offers are very good and will give us a chance to earn buckets of Hilton Honors points toward our 2019 hotel stays!

Summary of the Offers

Let’s start with a quick top-level overview of all of the recent Amex-Hilton offers:

(1)  Earn up to 40,000 Hilton Honors (HH) bonus points with $4,000 spend – broken into 2 parts, earn 20,000 HH points after you spend $2,000, then earn another 20,000 HH points after you spend another $2,000 (complete spend by 12/25/2018)

(2) Earn 13x HH points per dollar on spend at Amazon (3x normal earning plus additional 10x bonus), up to a cap of $500 in purchases (ends 1/29/2019)

(3)  Earn 10,000 HH bonus points after you spend $200 in eligible purchases at US supermarkets (ends 11/30/2018)

(4)  Get 15% statement credit on purchases at US supermarkets, up to $10 – Amex Offer on Amex Hilton co-branded cards (expires 12/31/2018)

Details and Analysis of Each of the Offers

Now let’s take a look at each of the offers in a little more detail:

(1) HH Bonus Points for General Spend

We already covered this promotion in detail in our earlier article, so we won’t re-hash it in detail here. Basically:

  • Earn up to 40,000 HH bonus points with $4,000 spend – broken into 2 parts – earn 20,000 HH points after you spend $2,000, then earn another 20,000 HH points after you spend another $2,000
  • Must complete spend by 12/25/2018
  • Using our baseline value of 0.5 cents per HH point, this bonus is worth an extra 5% on spend, in addition to what you otherwise earn – unbonused spend results in a total of 6.5% return on spend, and the return is higher if you spend in bonus categories
  • Offer is targeted and comes by email
  • I received this offer on my Ascend card; others have also reported it on Aspire cards
  • You must enroll in the promotion, which you can do from a button in the email
  • I have seen some reports that people received a similar offer where the numbers are exactly half – that is, earn up to 20,000 HH bonus points with $2,000 spend, broken into 2 parts of 10,000 HH points for $1,000 spend, which you can do twice
  • We think this is a very good promotion and we plan on doing it

(2) HH Bonus Points for Spend at Amazon

On this one, the graphic above pretty much says it all in terms of the key details:

  • 13x HH bonus points per dollar spent at Amazon.com, on up to $500 in purchases
  • Must complete spend by 1/29/2019

Other important points:

  • I received this offer on my Aspire card – however, I have also seen reports of people receiving it on Ascend cards and Amex Hilton no-fee cards
  • On each card, Amazon.com spend is unbonused, earning 3x HH points per dollar – therefore, this offer is essentially for 10x additional HH points per dollar of spend
  • At our baseline value of 0.5 cents per HH point, this is a 6.5% return on your Amazon spend
  • The offer is targeted and comes by email
  • You must enroll in this promotion, which you can do by clicking the “Enroll Now” button in the email – once you click “Enroll Now,” it takes you to the landing page where you can simply enter your card’s CVV code, and you’re good to go

Here’s our analysis of this offer:

  • 6.5% is a good return on Amazon spend, better than you can get by using any other card directly.  Our “default” card for Amazon purchases paid for directly with a credit card is the AT&T Access More card, which earns 3x Citi ThankYou points (TYP) for online purchases. At our baseline value of 1.25 cents per TYP, that earns us 3.75%.
  • However, we pay for almost all of our Amazon purchases using an Amazon gift card balance.  We can purchase Amazon GCs at Office Depot/Office Max using our Chase Ink Cash at earn 5x Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR) points per dollar (up to the cap of $25,000 per year, which we’re not close to hitting in 2018).  At a baseline value of 1.5 cents per UR point, that gives us a return of 7.5%.  Plainly, this method out-performs earning 6.5% back through this promo.
  • And for the moment, we can do even better than our Amazon purchases.  From now through November 30, we have Amex Offers on several business cards where we can get 10% statement credit on purchases at Lowe’s (up to $1,000 in purchases/$100 credit). We’ve been using this offer to purchase Amazon GCs at Lowe’s.  The Offer appeared on several of our Amex business cards, including the Blue Business Plus, the Business Platinum, the Premier Rewards Gold business card, and the SPG business card.  Depending on the card, this is currently giving us a return of 11.5% to 13% on our Amazon spend.
  • Given this situation, I don’t think we’ll be using this particular offer in general.  However, I’m going to replace the AT&T Access More card with my Amex Hilton Aspire card as our default method of payment.  That way, for any charges that don’t get paid with our GC balance for whatever reason, we’ll up our return from 3.75% to 6.5%.
  • All that said, for anyone who doesn’t have the Amex Offers on business cards or a Chase Ink Cash business card (or the legacy Chase Ink Plus business card) – I’d say this is a very good offer and you should use it.
    • Baked into this conclusion is my assumption that if you hold an Amex Hilton co-branded card, then Hilton Honors points are valuable to you.

(3) HH Bonus Points for Spend at US Supermarkets

Again, the graphics have the key details of this offer:

  • Earn 10,000 HH bonus points after you spend $200 in eligible purchases at US supermarkets
  • Must complete spend by 11/30/2018

And here are some other important points:

  • I received this offer on my Aspire card – however, I have also seen reports of people receiving it on Ascend cards and Amex Hilton no-fee cards
  • The offer is targeted and comes by email
  • You must enroll in this promotion, which you can do by clicking the “Enroll Now” button in the email – once you click “Enroll Now,” it takes you to the landing page where you can simply enter your card’s CVV code, and you’re good to go
  • At our baseline value of 0.5 cents per HH point, this is a whopping 25% return on your US supermarket spend, even before you add in your normal points-earning for supermarkets
  • Earning rates for spend at US supermarkets on the various Amex Hilton cards are:
    • Aspire – 3x HH points/dollar (unbonused) (1.5%)
    • Ascend – 6x HH points/dollar (3%)
    • No-Fee card – 5x HH points/dollar (2.5%)
  • Thus, with this promo, your total return is 26.5% to 28%
  • This offer will also stack with the Amex Offer discussed below, if you have both offers on the same card

Our analysis on this one is pretty simple – definitely use it!  This is a great bonus and a great return on US supermarket spend.  If you’re not buying $200 worth of groceries this month, then make up the difference by buying a third-party GC at your local supermarket.  One possible suggestion – an Amazon GC at Whole Foods would be easy to buy and easy to spend!

(4) Amex Offer for Statement Credit at US Supermarkets

This offer is different, in that it’s a standard Amex Offer, rather than an email promotion.  We’re including it here because it appears to be targeted to Amex Hilton co-branded cards, and it stacks perfectly with the US Supermarket bonus we just discussed.

Here is the Offer:

  • Get 15% statement credit on purchases at US supermarkets, up to $10
  • The Offer expires 12/31/2018
  • As with all Amex Offers, you must activate the Offer prior to using it

I received this offer on my Amex Hilton Aspire card, so it will stack with my US Supermarket 10,000-HH-point bonus offer.

The offer is modest in that it’s capped at $66.67 spend (to hit the $10 statement credit max).  But we’re always happy to save 10 bucks, and we’ll gladly take and use this Offer!

Wrap-Up

I have to say, I really appreciate the efforts Amex is making to win our spend.  We’ll enjoy taking advantage of these bonus offers and using the extra HH points to stay at some nice Hilton properties in the coming months!
