3 New Amex Offers to Save Money on Hotels – Omni, DoubleTree, AmexTravel.com

Executive Summary

Over the past few days we’ve seen three new Amex Offers for hotel stays that can save you money over the next few months.  The new Amex Offers for hotels are:

  • DoubleTree hotels – $45 statement credit when you spend $225 (exp. 1/31/2019)
  • AmexTravel.com – 6,000 Amex Membership Rewards (MR) points (or perhaps $60 statement credit) when you spend $350 on a pre-paid hotel booking (expires 12/31/2018)

We also wanted to take this opportunity to recap no less than 12 other current Amex Offers for hotels.  Here are several offers that expire between now and December 15, which we reported on in our article, Save Money on Hotels! Catching Up on 11 Current Amex Offers:

  • Caesars properties – $50 statement credit when you spend $250 (exp. 12/15/18)

Next, there are two active Offers for Hilton-family properties, which we reported on in our article, New Amex Offers for Hilton-Family Hotels – Waldorf, Conrad, Hilton, Curio & Canopy:

Details of the New Amex Offers for Hotels

(1) Omni Hotels & Resorts

To redeem the current Amex Offer for Omni Hotels & Resorts, spend at least $250 at an Omni property in the United States, and receive a $50 statement credit.  This offer expires on 2/28/2019.

Reservations must be made (a) online at omnihotels.com; or (b) by calling 1-800-843-6664.  The Offer states that Omni store purchases are excluded.  However, I would feel confident that all charges made to your room will qualify for the Offer.  The Offer also states that gift card purchases are excluded.  I’m not sure whether Omni hotels sell gift cards on-site that can be charged to a room, but if so, those may qualify for this Offer as well.

We are not aware of a Membership Rewards (MR)-earning version of this Offer.

Full terms and conditions of the Omni Amex Offer are as follows:

(2) DoubleTree Hotels

To redeem the DoubleTree Amex Offer, spend $225 or more at any DoubleTree Hotel in the United States, and get a $45 statement credit.  This Offer expires on 1/31/2019.

This Offer applies only to DoubleTree properties, and not any other Hilton-portfolio brands.

The Offer states that reservations must be made either (a) online at doubletree.com; (b) via the Hilton Honors App; or (c) by calling the hotel’s reservations line at 1-800-445-8667.  That said, we feel quite sure that reservations made through Hilton’s main website at hilton.com will also qualify.  We have successfully redeemed other Hilton-family Amex Offers several times on reservations made through hilton.com.

The Offer states that Advance Purchase rates and Non-Refundable rates are not eligible.  It also states that gift card purchases are not eligible; however, we do wonder if a physical gift card purchased at the hotel would actually qualify for the offer.  We have successfully triggered Amex Offers for another brand in the Hilton portfolio by purchasing a physical gift card at the front desk.  However, we do not know if DoubleTree hotels actually sell gift cards.

We are not aware of an MR-earning version of this Offer.

This Offer will stack with Hilton’s current Moments Made BIgger promotion (double points on most DoubleTree properties, and triple points on a few DoubleTree “resort” properties) if the terms of both the Offer and the promotion are met.  It should also stack with other Hilton-family promotions, like Hilton’s new-member promotion, assuming that the terms of all promotions are met.

Full terms and conditions are as follows:

(3) Prepaid Hotels booked via AmexTravel.com

To redeem the current Amex Offer for prepaid hotels booked via AmexTravel.com, spend $350 or more on a single purchase for a prepaid hotel booking online at amextravel.com by 12/31/2018, and receive 6,000 Amex MR points.

Note that for this Offer, you must spend at least $350 in a single transaction (whereas most Amex Offers can be satisfied through multiple transactions that add up to at least the spend threshold).

Unfortunately, this Offer expressly excludes Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) bookings.

On the bright side, this Offer can be used for hotels outside the US; however, the booking must be made on the US website, amextravel.com.

Note that the prepaid Amex Travel bookings that qualify for this offer are third-party bookings that will not qualify for elite points or nights in hotel loyalty programs, and elite benefits such as breakfast or room upgrades also probably will not be available.  This is a major downside to booking rooms through Amex Travel (or any other third party booking service such as Expedia, Booking.com, Priceline, Orbitz, etc.).

We are not sure whether there is a statement credit version of this Offer.  We didn’t have a statement credit on any of our cards.  In any event, we would personally prefer 6,000 MR points to a $60 statement credit, as we can easily get more than 1 cent per MR point in value on our travel redemptions.

Full terms and conditions are as follows:

Additional Thoughts and Analysis

As far as we know, these Offers are subject to Amex’s recent one-Offer-per-person limitation. That said, if you have cards in multiple people’s names, you should be able to use the Offers multiple times for a single stay by splitting the payment at check-out. For example, Philly and I both have Amex cards with these Offers. If we had a Doubletree stay that cost more than $450, we could put at least $225 on my enrolled Amex card and another $225 or more on her enrolled Amex card, and thereby get 2 statement credits. In this example, you’d save $90 off a $450 stay, bring your total down to $360 and saving you 20%!

Also remember that if your bill is close to the spend threshold, you’ll save money if you purchase something else to bring your total up to an amount that will trigger the Offer. For example, if your bill at a Doubletree hotel would be $200, go to the hotel gift shop and buy something for $25 to bring your total to $225, then pay with your enrolled Amex card to trigger the credit. That way, you’ll get your $25 item for “free” and pay only $180 instead of $200.

As best we can tell, all of these new Offers appear to be widely targeted.

We hope you can take advantage of these Amex Offers to get additional value on your upcoming hotel stays!
