Current Amex Offers to Save Money at Hotels – Part 2 (including stacking strategies)

Middle Age Miles had a good stay a few years ago at the Loews Santa Monica, which is beautifully located along the beachfront, a short walk from famed Santa Monica Pier

On Tuesday, we published Part 1 of our recap of current Amex Offers to save you money on hotel stays. In that first article, we focused on the good new Amex Offers for Hilton-family properties:

Today, we’re back with Part 2, this time focusing on 9 more current Amex Offers for hotels, at hotels other than Hilton-family properties. We’ll break this one up into two sections – one section for larger hotel brands or booking sites, then a few other highly-specific Offers.

Current Amex Offers for Hotels – Larger Hotel Brands or Booking Sites

1 – Loews – $70 statement credit when you spend $350 (expires 3/31/2019)

The Loews chain has 27 properties across North America. The Amex Offer is valid at all of the properties in the US, except for properties within Universal Studios in Orlando. Loews properties outside the US are not eligible. The Loews properties are high-end but not ultra-luxury.

Middle Age Miles stayed at the Loews Santa Monica a few years ago and enjoyed it. That hotel is situated right along the beachfront, just a modest walk away from the famed Santa Monica Pier, with unobstructed access to Santa Monica beach. We’ve also visited the Loews South Beach in Miami, although we didn’t stay there, and it was also quite nice.

Several of the Loews properties that qualify for this Offer are also part of the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) program – (1) Loews Atlanta; (2) Loews Chicago; (3) Loews Hotel 1000, Seattle; (4) Loews Miami South Beach; (5) Loews Regency New York; (6) Loews Regency San Francisco; (7) Loews Ventana Canyon Resort. At these properties, you could stack FHR benefits with this Amex Offer.

In addition, we see 2 Loews hotels bookable through Virtuoso that would likewise allow you to stack elite-like benefits with the Amex Offer – (1) Loews Regency San Francisco; and (2) Loews Hotel 1000, Seattle.

2 – MGM Resorts – $60 statement credit (or 6,000 Membership Rewards (MR) points) when you spend $300 (expires 4/22/2019)

The MGM Resorts Amex Offer is valid at the MGM properties in Las Vegas (Bellagio, Aria, Vdara, MGM Grand, The Signature at MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Delano, Park MGM, NoMad, The Mirage, New York-New York, Luxor and Excalibur). It’s also valid at these other MGM properties in the US – Beau Rivage, Gold Strike Borgata, MGM National Harbor and MGM Springfield.

Reservations must be made directly with MGM, online, by phone, or by mobile app.

One way to stack this Offer would be to use it in connection with an MGM promotional rate. We receive these offers fairly regularly via email, and some of them are quite good. Some promotional rates include food & beverage credits, which are very useful in Las Vegas. Another way to get discounted rates is by logging in to your MLife account. Higher MLife status levels receive better discounts.

In addition, remember that your spend at MGM resorts earns tier credits at MLife, which you can link to your World of Hyatt account and perhaps earn a higher status level with Hyatt. Room rates and other spend charged to your room at MGM properties also earn Hyatt points, when your Hyatt number is attached to your reservation.

3 – Kimpton Hotels – $60 statement credit when you spend $300 (expires 5/1/2019)

This Offer is valid only at Kimpton hotels in the US. We’ve seen some very interesting Kimpton promotional rates recently for specific properties, including one for Austin and Phoenix that’s still alive through tomorrow.

We also received an email this week for a 30% off promotional rate at Kimpton Hotels in Washington, DC, Alexandria and Baltimore. We didn’t write a separate article about that one, but it looks like a good deal, and reservations may be canceled until 7 days prior to the stay. Bookings for this promo can be made through Wednesday, March 20, and stays may be through July 7 (of course, only stays through May 1 would overlap with the Amex Offer). It looks like 12 Kimpton hotels in the DC area are included:

Note that you’ll also earn IHG points for these stays, plus any additional points-earning available pursuant to your personalized offer in IHG’s current “Free Nights Faster” promotion (through April 30).

4 – Country Inn & Suites / Park Inn – $20 statement credit when you spend $100 (expires 5/14/2019)

This Offer is only good at Country Inn & Suites and Park Inn properties in the US. Booking must be direct, and you can earn your normal Radisson points for your stay.

5 – St Regis – $100 statement credit when you spend $500 (expires 5/31/2019)

This Offer is good at St. Regis hotels in the US, Canada and Mexico – but not elsewhere in the world. Bookings must be direct through Marriott or St. Regis, either online, through the Marriott app, or by phone. Because you’re booking direct, you’ll receive your normal elite benefits and Marriott points-earning, including promotional points.

6 – Tripfuel.com, a Priceline company – $50 statement credit when you spend $200; use up to 3x (expires 6/3/2019)

Note that Tripfuel is a special case because it is a third party booking service. You should not expect to earn loyalty program points or receive elite benefits if you book through Tripfuel. In addition, their rates may not be as good as you can get by booking direct. In other words, this is potentially useful in some circumstances, but be careful with it.

There is no limitation in the terms and conditions about the geographic location of the hotel property you book through Tripfuel. Thus, by all accounts, it appears that this Offer would be open for hotels worldwide.

Current Amex Offers for Hotels – Highly-Specific Offers

7 – The Manhattan Club Hotel NYC – $30 statement credit when you spend $150 (expires 4/30/2019)

The Manhattan Club Hotel is a residence-style boutique hotel in midtown Manhattan, at 7th Ave & 56th St (200 W. 56th). We’ve no doubt walked right past it but never noticed it before. The location seems good, just 3 blocks from the southern edge of Central Park and a block away from the 57th St subway station.

The hotel looks nice enough on its website, and it has some interesting-looking rates and deals. We didn’t go all the way through booking, but as far as we went, we didn’t see any “destination fee” or “resort fee” at this property.

All of the rooms at the Manhattan Club are marketed as suites. I see one as small as 284 square feet, but most of the rooms look large in the context of midtown Manhattan hotels. We don’t see any loyalty program or points play (aside from using a program where you can redeem points for statement credit against a hotel stay, like with the Barclays Arrival Plus, Bank of America Travel Rewards, Capital One Venture, or US Bank Altitude Reserve).

This is not a recommendation, as we haven’t laid eyes on the property. But it was far more interesting to research than we expected.

8 – Woodside Hotel Group (California) – $50 statement credit when you spend $250 (expires 5/31/2019)

The Woodside Hotel Group appears to include 10 properties in Northern California – (1) Indian Springs Calistoga; (2) Harvest Inn St. Helena; (3) Bodega Bay Lodge; (4) Napa Valley Lodge in Yountville; (5) Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa; (6) Hotel Drisco in San Francisco (Pacific Heights); (7) Stanford Park Hotel in Menlo Park; (8) Dream Inn in Santa Cruz; (9) Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa; and (10) Bernardus Lodge & Spa in Carmel Valley.

We had never heard of the Woodside Hotel Group before researching this Amex Offer, but the properties look pretty nice on the website.

9 – Rosen Shingle Creek, Orlando – $100 statement credit when you spend $500 (expires 7/25/2019)

Rosen Shingle Creek is a beautiful-looking hotel southwest of downtown Orlando (toward Disney and roughly near Universal). It overlooks the Shingle Creek Golf Club and appears to be a golf-centric property.

Rosen Shingle Creek advertises “no resort fees” and free Wi-Fi in guestrooms, both of which we appreciate.

Rosen Shingle Creek is a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts and participates in the iPrefer loyalty program, which adds a “points” element – and possibly elite benefits – that you can stack with the Amex Offer.

We hope that you’ve found this article helpful to remind you about current Amex Offers that might save you money on hotels and help you think about how to stack deals to maximize them. Best of luck for getting a great deal on a fun stay on your upcoming travels!
