Introduction

We have 2 Marriott-related tricks to report today – one that allows you to sign up for an Amex Offer for Marriott properties on any card, including co-branded cards, and the other that allows you to get 10% cash back or 10x Amex Membership Rewards (MR) points back when booking at a Marriott hotel through Ebates today.

The two tricks aren’t really related, except for both being for Marriott – but you can stack them for multiple savings on an upcoming Marriott stay! They’ll both also stack with Marriott’s current “Double Take” promotion where you can earn double base points for all Marriott stays through June 4, starting with your second stay.

Register Any Amex Card for the Marriott Bonvoy Amex Offer – including co-branded cards!

Amex released a new Amex Offer this week for Marriott-family hotels – get $40 back in statement credit when you spend $200 or more at a Marriott Bonvoy property in the US and US territories. Of course, this is a great Offer that can save you up to 20% at Marriott hotels.

The disappointing thing, when we checked our online accounts, was that the Offer was only showing up on Amex MR-earning cards, and not on our Marriott co-branded cards (the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card, and the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Business card). Amongst our Amex cards at Marriott hotels, points earning on the co-branded cards is best-in-class, earning 6 Marriott points per dollar of spend (points rebate of about 4.2% at our baseline value of 0.7 cents per Marriott point).

So, yesterday I sat tight and didn’t add the Offer to any cards, hoping that they’d show up on a Marriott co-branded card later.

And indeed, last night Doctor of Credit posted an article with a public link for the Marriott Amex Offer that allows you to add the Offer to any Amex card, including co-branded cards:

Major Hat Tip to Doc and his reader wwllmm for this trick!

The steps to add the offer are straightforward:

  • Go to the link, which will take you to an Amex login screen
  • Log in to the online account for the card where you want to add the Offer
  • If your online account has multiple cards associated with it, choose the desired card
  • The Offer will then appear, and you can then click “Add to Card”

It’s also possible to log in to your online account first, then open the link in another window in the same browser, then add the Offer.

Note that even with this ninja trick, you’ll still only be able to add the Marriott Amex Offer to one card for each person. Also, we did not see a corresponding MR-earning version of this Offer, only the statement credit version.

This Marriott Amex Offer is only good at Marriott Bonvoy properties in the US and US territories. Reservations must be made through a direct channel. Marriott Vacation Club, Design Hotels, Protea Hotels, and Marriott Executive Apartments are excluded. The terms say that gift cards are excluded, but our experience and understanding is that a purchase of a physical gift card at a hotel front desk will trigger the Offer. The Offer expires on June 3, 2019, which dovetails nicely with Marriott’s current “Double Take” promotion that runs through June 4.

Ebates Today Only – 10% / 10x MR at Marriott Hotels

We’ve been on a very fortunate run recently where Ebates has been offering 10% cash back/10x MR point earning on Marriott reservations made through the Ebates shopping portal. This offer has been showing up regularly on Ebates Travel Thursdays, and for some reason we’re getting another chance this week on Tuesday!

As you probably know, there are now two types of Ebates accounts – regular accounts that earn cash back, and a new type of Ebates account that earns Amex Membership Rewards points back rather than cash. At Middle Age Miles, we love earning MR points and get more value by using our MR-earning account than we would via cash back (that is, we value MR points at more than 1 cent per point).

The Ebates-Marriott promotional rate is available at any Marriott hotel worldwide, so long as you click through the Ebates portal to reach Marriott to make your booking, subject to a few exceptions:

  • You don’t earn cash-back/MR points on anything other than room rate
  • Certain rates don’t qualify – “rooms offered at specially negotiated rates, where the customer is required to be affiliated with or employed by a particular company or organization to receive the special rate (e.g, government rate or the Marriott employee rate)”
  • Certain brands do not qualify – Ritz-Carlton Destination Club, Design Hotels, Bulgari, and W Hotels.
  • Certain properties are excluded – Atlantis, Autograph Collection; Bulgari Hotel, London; Joshua G.E. Medical Corp. Conference Center; Jesse Jones Rotary Conference Center; Marriott Ranch; Protea Hotel Amani Beach; Protea Hotel Mbweni Ruins; The Ritz-Carlton London; US Postal Service Conference Center; Four Points by Sheraton Havana; The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas, Autograph Collection.

On all Marriott stays booked by clicking through Ebates, you’re booking directly, so you’ll receive your regular points earning and elite night credits, plus any elite benefits you have. Your stay will also qualify for the current Marriott “Double Take” promotion through June 4. And, you’d be able to also use the Marriott Amex Offer we detailed above, for multiple-promotion stacking!

We have one word of caution about booking Marriott stays through portals – keep your fingers crossed that the booking tracks correctly. We have an outstanding issue with the AAdvantage eShopping portal where we’ve yet to receive 6,500 AA miles from a Marriott booking through that portal. The AAdvantage eShopping agents have been responsive to us, and they claim that they continue to await confirmation from Marriott before they can award miles, which has not been forthcoming in more than a month. Just remember that it’s a great deal in concept, and it probably works most of the time, but it’s not foolproof. If you have options, we’d always recommend going for sure savings over portal rewards on hotel stays.

You mention that you can only add the offer to “one card for each person.” Can I add it to all the authorized user cards on my SPG card and redeem it multiple times – once on each card? I have gotten conflicting answers on this and would love a definitive answer.

Hi Patty – Thanks for reading, and thanks for your comment and question. The answer to your question is Yes. Enroll each card in the Offer through its own online Amex account. Then at checkout, split tender so that you’re paying at least $200 on each card. The Amex Offer will trigger and pay on each card. I hope you have a great stay and save a bunch of money with this trick! And I hope you continue to read and enjoy Middle Age Miles. ~Craig
