UPDATE 3/29/19, 7:00 am Central time – Reader Waynw was kind enough to mention that the 8 Viva Wyndham all-inclusive properties should be included in this list. I agree, and I’ve now added them. In addition, I’ve added the Trademark Collection resorts in Hawaii to this list. I originally excluded them because I could not find any points availability. However, upon further research I realized that the properties are indeed bookable if you meet minimum stay requirements, and my test searches were for time periods that were too short. Finally, we also added the Wyndham Mauna Loa Village hotel, for the same reason. The addition of these 13 properties brings our total list up to 235.

A few weeks ago, Wyndham announced that its Wyndham Rewards program would soon be undergoing a radical shift in points redemptions. For the past few years, Wyndham Rewards has had the unique feature that all “Go Free” free-night points redemptions, at all properties in the program, cost 15,000 points. This was true from the lowliest of Super 8 hotels to the nicest Wyndham Grand in the portfolio.

As of April 3, though, Wyndham Rewards flat-rate pricing will be no more. Instead, Wyndham Rewards is moving to a three-category structure for free night awards:

  • About 1/3 of Wyndham Rewards properties will cost 7,500 points
  • About 2/3 of Wyndham Rewards properties will cost 15,000 points
  • About 200 Wyndham Rewards properties will cost 30,000 points

Given that the value of Wyndham Rewards redemptions has been in getting the relatively few higher-end properties at 15,000 points, this change is a massive devaluation.

The challenge here is that Wyndham hasn’t announced which ~200 hotels are doubling in price to 30,000 points. And they’re not going to do so before rates change on April 3. What to do?

In this article, we make some predictions. We’re taking our best guess at the approximately 200 hotels that we think are likely to move up to 30,000 points per night next week. To this end, we’re giving you a list of 221 235 of the higher-end Wyndham Rewards hotels.

We’re sure we’ll miss on some of these guesses – and we certainly don’t have any inside information – but we’ve given it a calculated, educated guess. Obviously our list of 221 235 is more than the “approximately 200” hotels that Wyndham has told us to expect. Please don’t fuss at us if we’re wrong – you haven’t lost anything if a property stays at the 15,000-point redemption level.

Hopefully this will give you some ideas so that you can book these nicer properties now before award prices double. Note that you can book stays up to 1 year in advance – the Wyndham schedule is currently open through March 26, 2020. Make your reservations asap – and no later than Tuesday, April 2!

There are a number of other changes happening with Wyndham Rewards in the next few days. One, the La Quinta Returns program is ending as of 3/31/2019. For elite LQ Returns members, points will auto-convert to Wyndham Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio. But if you’re non-elite in LQ Returns, you’ll lose half your points in the auto-conversion. Instead, you need to manually transfer your LQ points to Wyndham by Sunday 3/31. For more detail, see our article, Convert Your La Quinta Returns Points Into Wyndham Rewards by March 31. Two, there are other changes happening with Wyndham Rewards as of 4/3/2019 aside from the major change to award redemptions. This article by Stephen at Frequent Miler is the most complete summary and analysis we’ve seen: The New Wyndham Rewards: Everything We Know So Far & What You Need To Do.

221 235 Hotels to Book on Points by April 2

Since Wyndham isn’t helping us out by telling us what hotels will be increasing in price, we decided to dive in. We wanted to see if we could give Middle Age Miles readers some help in deciding what hotels should be booked now before they double in points price. The devaluation is so severe that everyone should do all they can to take advantage of booking nice properties by April 2, before the changes take effect.

We didn’t parse with a fine-toothed comb, but we identified 221 235 hotels that we think are likely to increase in price. We identified 5 Wyndham brands that are higher-end and seem very likely to be included in the “group of 200” increasing in price. In addition, we’ve identified the 3 highest-end Las Vegas properties in the Caesars family and 2 Wyndham-family hotels in Hawaii where we believe award prices are likely to double.

[Correction & Update 3/29/19, 7:00 am Central time: These are actually bookable with points but have minimum stay requirements for award redemptions (3+ nights, we believe). Thus, we’ve added the Trademark Collection Hawaii resorts to this list.] In addition, we listed the Mountainside Lodge at Whistler, even though our test searches only located “Go Fast” rewards and not “Go Free” free-night awards.

Wrap-Up and Conclusion

We hope you’ve found our “educated guess” list of 221 235 Wyndham Rewards hotels that seem likely to increase in price next week to be helpful. If you have a Wyndham Rewards points balance, it’s seriously in your best interest to get higher-end properties booked right away, and by Tuesday, April 2 at latest, as most of these hotels will be doubling in price on April 3.

At the top end, there can be some outstanding value to be had here. As an outlier example, during this research we located a night at the very nice Silverado Resort & Spa in Napa Valley where the best paid rate was more than $400, but which can be reserved now for only 15,000 points.

Remember that you can book stays for up to 1 year in advance. As we publish this article on 3/28/2019, the Wyndham booking schedule is open through March 26, 2020.

We currently assign Wyndham Rewards points a baseline value of 0.9 cents per point, but we’ll surely be decreasing that value after the new tiered pricing kicks in next week. We’ll study the changes once they’re in place and make an appropriate adjustment then.

Finally, on a personal level, I’m glad that we did this research, as I think we may have found a nice use for 2 free nights that would be useful to us and burn off the rest of our modest Wyndham Rewards points balance at a nice return!

Good luck with your own Wyndham searches, and have fun on your travels!

Did you find good uses for your Wyndham Rewards points? What properties will you book before next week’s devaluation? Do you disagree with our educated guesses or have other properties that Middle Age Miles readers should be considering booking now? Please let us know in the Comments!

Hi Waynw – I really appreciate the comment, and I totally agree. The Viva Wyndham all-inclusives should definitely be included in the list, and I’ve updated the article to add them. This is exactly the sort of discussion we hoped to encourage with this article! We also added 6 more Hawaii properties to the list, including all 5 Trademark Collection resorts in Hawaii. We had initially excluded them because we couldn’t find points availability. But it turns out that our test searches were just too short for the minimum stay requirements at these properties (which seem to be 3 nights). I hope you’re able to use your WR points at someplace fun before they devalue! Thanks again, and I hope you continue to enjoy Middle Age Miles. ~Craig

Nice work. Just snatched six nights in July at the Kauai Coast Resort and emptied out my account. How come there’s no La Quinta properties on this list? Are you assuming those won’t change to 30,000 points per night?

    1. Craig at Middle Age Miles Post author

Thanks, Allan. That’s an awesome redemption – congrats!

Good question about the LQ hotels. My understanding was that the LQ hotels do not become available for booking using WR points until April 3. That said, you could have used your LQ points to book them, or even transferred WR points over to LQ to book, at least through yesterday (3/31/19). No more, though.

I feel certain that some finer-toothed combing would result in some other hotels likely to go up to 30k points, like the Wyndham in Park City, UT, and perhaps some of the NYC-area hotels. I was hitting a place of diminishing returns for the effort, though!

Thanks again for reading Middle Age Miles. I hope you continue to enjoy it! ~Craig
