Marriott Bonvoy “Endless Earning” Summer Promo Is Better Than a Sharp Stick in the Eye – But Not by Much

At Middle Age Miles, one of the phrases we repeatedly use is, “Never leave points on the table.” That saying seems particularly appropriate for Marriott’s new “Endless Earning” promotion for the rest of Summer 2019, because it’s worth registering to make sure you don’t leave any points on the table, but that’s about it.

Details of the Promotion & Registration Link

In short, the promotion is:

  • Earn 1,500 Marriott points for each stay of 2 nights or more during the promotion period
  • The promotion period runs from July 2 through September 16, 2019

You must register for the promotion in advance of your stay to earn the bonus points. Registration is now live, and it will be open through September 2.

Analysis of the “Endless Earning” Promotion

This Marriott promotion is better than nothing, but otherwise it’s exceptionally weak. If you have a 2-night or longer stay, you’ll earn 1,500 Marriott points. At our baseline value of 0.7 cents per Marriott point, that’s a bonus worth about $10.50. The bonus is only 1,500 points whether your stay is 2 nights or 10, and it’s the same whether your room rate is $100 or $500 per night. And you won’t earn any bonus points if you stay only 1 night.

Even in the very best-case scenario for this promo – say, a 2-night stay at $75 per night for a total of $150 (about the minimum you could spend on a paid rate to qualify) – the promotion would be worth only an extra 7% return. As another example, on a 3-night stay at $200 per night (total $600), the promotion would give you an extra 1.75% return on your spend.

One small piece of good news here – It appears that points award stays qualify for the promotion, so you should get a few points back if you have a 2-night or longer award stay during the promotion period.

The promotion is also stackable with portal bonuses. Marriott was having some good portal bonuses earlier this year, but they’ve settled back in at lower standard amounts as summer has approached. Of late, the best portal earning rates have been through Top Cashback, which has offered rates of 4% to 7%, depending on the length and geographic area of your stay.

The promotion should also stack with benefits from Amex FHR/Chase LHRC and Virtuoso, plus it should stack with the current Amex Offer for $40 statement credit when you spend $200 or more at Marriott properties in the US, at least until that Offer expires on September 3.

So, like we said – register for this promotion and then forget it. If you happen to have a qualifying stay at Marriott, you’ll pick up a few extra points. But this promotion definitely doesn’t justify moving any stays to Marriott.
