Amex recently acquired the dining reservations service Resy (a competitor to OpenTable), and it’s trying to get your attention and business by running a nice promotion.
Details of the Amex-Resy Promotion
Starting on August 15 and running through September 30, 2019, you can earn 500 Amex Membership Rewards (MR) points by making and fulfilling dining reservations through Resy. You can earn these bonus MR points up to 3 times.
To become eligible for the bonus MR points, you’ll need to:
- Set up a Resy account
- Add an Amex MR-earning card to your Resy profile as an approved payment method
- Book through Resy and fulfill your dining reservation from August 15 through September 30, 2019
- Note that your booking must be made and your actual dining experience must occur within this promotional period; bookings made prior to August 15 do not qualify for the promotion
We went through the steps to become eligible for the bonus points and didn’t have any problems with it. Hopefully the bonus MR points will post automatically and quickly once we book through Resy and dine during the promotional period! (Note that the terms & conditions say that points will be awarded within 8 to 12 weeks after the end of the promotional period. That means that it could be as late as the end of December before the points arrive.)
You can reach the Resy landing page for this promotion and read the full terms & conditions through this link:
We’ve read through the terms & conditions, and there does not seem to be a requirement that you actually pay for your restaurant meal using the Amex card that you added to your Resy account. The terms just say that you must add your Amex MR-earning card to your Resy wallet, then book and fulfill your reservation. That said, we haven’t used Resy before, so we’re not 100% sure how it works. We suspect that you can actually pay with a different card.
Our Analysis of the Promotion
This is a great promotion and opportunity for anyone who makes dining reservations to earn extra MR points. At our baseline value of 1.5 cents per MR point, the promotion is worth about $7.50 each time you use it. That’s a fantastic deal for doing something that you’d probably be doing anyway!
Strategically, we wonder if it would be possible to create a second Resy account and earn the bonus points up to 6 times instead of being limited to just 3. It seems like there’s a good chance this would work, if you help your chances by (1) using a different email address for your second account, and (2) use a different MR-earning Amex card as the payment method for your second account.
For us, we’ll just enroll one Resy account for me and another for Philly. It seems doubtful that we’ll make and fulfill more than 6 dinner reservations during the 1½ month promotional period. But if it turns out we’ll have more reservations than that, we’ll try to set up a second account and hope for more bonus points!
We hope you can earn some extra MR points and have a few great meals in the coming weeks using this nice promotion!
