It’s the first edition of our new “News & Notes” series that we promised in our recent “1st Birthday” article! We hope that we can use this series to get out to our readers more tricks, tips and news that you can use – things that are interesting and helpful, but don’t necessarily merit a full-blown analysis and article.
We’ll kick off our series with these 6 notes:
1. Amex Offer for Waldorf Astoria & Conrad
This one actually came out a couple of weeks ago, but we wanted to highlight it here. Receive a credit of $70 when you spend $350+ at a Waldorf Astoria or Conrad hotel. The Offer is good through 12/31/2019.
Many Amex Offers for hotels are good only in the US, but this one also includes international locations in China, Germay, France (how about the Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palace in Versailles?), Hong Kong, India, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore, Thailand, and the UK.
This Offer will stack with Hilton’s new worldwide double/triple points promotion. We expect to publish a full article on that promotion later today.
This Offer came up at a perfect time – one of our friends was actually in the middle of a stay at the Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas when the offer appeared. We were able to tell them to load the Offer onto the Amex card they already planned to use for payment, resulting in a quick-and-easy $70 savings!
2. Amex Offer for Marriott Bonvoy Luxury Brands
Here’s another valuable Amex Offer from last week. Receive a statement credit of $100 when you spend $500+ at certain Marriott Bonvoy luxury brands – Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, W Hotels, JW Marriott & EDITION properties. The Offer is good through 12/31/2019.
In contrast to the Waldorf Astoria/Conrad Offer, this Marriott Offer is good only at properties in the US, US territories, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. That’s too bad for us, as we have an upcoming stay at a Luxury Collection hotel in Europe that would be a perfect place to use this (and stack it with our Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card’s $300 annual credit).
3. New Amex Offer for ESPN+ Annual Subscription
This morning, we saw a new Amex Offer for $10 back when you spend $49+ to purchase an ESPN+ yearly subscription plan. The spend number for this Offer is very specifically targeted, since a year-long ESPN+ subscription costs $49.99. The Offer is valid through 12/7/2019.
This Offer is actually pretty attractive for us and may spur us into purchasing an ESPN+ subscription. We watch a lot of sports and wouldn’t mind having access to ESPN+’s exclusive content such as soccer, boxing and some of the lesser-known college football teams.
4. Upromise Shopping Portal Offers This Week for Choice and IHG Hotels
At one point a couple of years ago, Upromise was one of our top 3 favorite shopping portals, with cashback rates that were regularly competitive. But then it slipped for several months and became essentially irrelevant. Within the past few months, though Upromise has been earning its way back into our hearts and minds with some periodic good promotional rates.
This morning, we got some good travel news from Upromise – this week, bookings made through Upromise with Choice-brand hotels can earn 8% cash back, and bookings made through Upromise with IHG-brand hotels can earn 10% cash back. These are great earning rates. Earlier this year, promotional portal earning rates at Choice, IHG and Marriott were regularly reaching 10%/10x or even more, but those rates have been few and far between for the past several months. We’re glad to see Upromise return to at or near those historically high payback rates.
We’re not exactly sure when these promotional rates will end, but they do say they’re good “this week.” We’d make bookings sooner rather than later, and in any event no later than Friday 9/13.
Note that Upromise rates don’t show up on our favorite portal comparison site, Cashback Monitor, so you have to do a little extra work to find the Upromise rates.
One other Upromise deal for this week that may be helpful is 12% back at Dell Consumer online. Stack this with your $100 semi-annual Dell credit on the Amex Business Platinum card to sweeten that deal a bit.
We also saw that the American AAdvantage shopping portal has a promotional rate of 6x AA miles per dollar for Choice-brand hotels at the moment. TopCashback has 10% at Cambria Hotels (a Choice hotel brand), but that rate is only good at Cambria (TCB is only 5% at other Choice brands).
5. AAdvantage eShopping Bonus – Up to 2,000 Bonus AA Miles with 4 $75+ Purchases
AAdvantage eShopping is out with a new promotion today where you can earn up to 2,000 bonus AA miles if you make 4 separate purchases of $75 or more through the AAdvantage shopping portal between now and September 16.
Each purchase of $75 or more earns 500 bonus AA miles, up to a cap of 2,000 AA miles total if you make 4 purchases of $75+. The bonus miles will stack with your regular portal mileage earnings.
You must register for this promotion in advance. Here’s a link to the landing/registration page:

6. Kroger Is No Longer on Dosh
Unfortunately, as of sometime this weekend (Saturday 9/7?), Kroger no longer appears as a merchant eligible for cash back through the Dosh app. This is a real blow for those who were enjoying the Dosh cash back benefits when purchasing groceries or gift cards at Kroger.
For a while, purchases at Kroger were earning 4% cash back with a cap of $10 at Dosh (at least here in North Texas). A few days ago, the rate dropped to 3% cash back with a cap of $5 – not nearly so good, but still workable. Sadly, Kroger is gone from Dosh altogether, at least for now. We’ll hope that it returns at some point, and we’ll let you know if we see it again!
We hope you’ve enjoyed this first episode of our “News & Notes” series. We’ll plan to keep the news coming – and hopefully with this format we can provide you with more helpful tips and information than ever before!
