Writing from the Galleries First Lounge in LHR Terminal 5 after a smooth and early-arriving flight on AA 50 from DFW …
We wanted to give our readers a heads-up that content is likely to be sparse through the end of next week, as Philly and I are off and away on what promises to be an interesting and fun trip to Cyprus & Jordan.
The idea behind this trip went something like this – For the last several years at Thanksgiving +/- 1-2 weeks, we’ve taken a trip to Europe. It’s a great time to travel in that it’s off-season, there are few crowds, and rates can be very good. The trips have been wonderful – 2016 to Geneva, 2017 to Paris, and 2018 to London. But they’ve been chilly with a lot of grey weather. So, this year, we thought, maybe we could take the same idea but go someplace warmer!
That thought led us to look at Cyprus, a favorite winter vacation destination of many Brits. That looked like a fun venture in itself. But that led us to explore further in the area. Petra has long been on our list of places to visit, and Jordan is very reachable once we’re in Cyprus – a 1-hour flight on Royal Jordanian (RJ), and RJ is part of OneWorld, so we’d even have status for that short flight. And, lo and behold, we found saver-level availability in business class on RJ for our flight back to the US.
We’ll review the full trip planning in a later post – it may make your head spin – but everything fell into place quite nicely.
We’ll spend 3 nights in Cyprus, at the Marriott Luxury Collection’s Category 8 Parklane hotel. Remarkably (a benefit of traveling off-peak), our suite night upgrades cleared into a 1,000+ square foot Lifestyle Suite overlooking the Mediterranean. The stay should be fabulous.
After that, we’ll head over to Jordan. First, we’ll transit to Petra for a night at the Petra Marriott before spending the better part of a day exploring Petra.
We’ll spend the last 4 nights of our trip relaxing at the Marriott Dead Sea Resort & Spa, where we’ll relax and take a couple of day trips to some of the local religious sites (Jesus’ baptism site at the River Jordan and Mount Nebo, where Moses first viewed the Promised Land) and some other sites of interest.
So far, it’s been a smooth trip, and the BA Galleries First lounge has treated us well on our layover. Given that it’s morning time, we skipped the Champagne Bar, though! Next up, a 4½ BA flight from LHR to Cyprus (Larnaca (LCA)).
