Bravo Codes as Online Purchase for Citi Prestige 5x Online Promo

bravo codes online purchase citi prestige 5x thank you points typs promotion promo

Last week, we reported on the Citi Prestige 5x promotion for online purchases. The promotion is in effect from 6/2 through 8/31/2020. Its terms were a bit vague, but in general it promised a total of 5x ThankYou Points (TYPs) for online purchases, with a cap of 7,500 TYPs:

In the article, we described our plan to earn the bonus through online purchases of gift cards through VanillaGift.com (VG.com). As it turned out, though, we had a glitch with our attempt to purchase at VG.com. The purchase was denied by VG.com (although approved by Citi), perhaps because we were out of town and our IP address did not match our usual location for purchases through VG.com.

This caused us to broaden our thought process, though. We wondered whether payments through the Bravo app might qualify as Online purchases for purposes of this promotion. Bravo purchases do *not* earn 3x as online retail/travel purchases on the Citi AT&T Access More card, but it seemed like Citi might be using a different filter to determine what constitutes an Online purchase for purposes of the new Prestige 5x promo.

So, we tried a small Bravo payment using our Citi Prestige – and voila! The purchase showed up as an Online payment and indeed earned 5x TYPs through the promotion.

Here’s a screenshot showing that Citi identified our original Bravo payment as an Online purchase, and that our original Bravo payment and several larger subsequent Bravo payments earned 5x TYPs:

This worked out great. For a modest fee, we were able to knock out most of the purchase cap for the 5x promotion and earn several thousand TYPs. We’ll look forward to using those points for travel, hopefully sooner rather than later!

In case you’re wondering, full terms & conditions of the Citi Prestige 5x promotion for Online purchases are as follows:

VanillaGift cancelled nearly all my orders, no reason given beyond “unable to verify address”. Which was absurd since they popped up a validation screen from the CC issuer. If you do use them (and manage to get an order in) note they offer promo codes to eliminate fees regularly. Orders that went through (e-gift cards) to my wife worked, but to my kids did not work. Same PC, same IP, no clue what the difference was.

Hey SSB – Weird. You would think that, having gone to all the trouble to set up a website and such, that VG.com would actually want to sell gift cards online. You actually got more info than I did from them. Mine just said that the purchase was canceled, with no explanation. I called Citi because I thought they may have blocked it, but they said that they approved. And like you, I successfully completed the validation screen online.

Thanks for the heads-up on the promo codes. I believe that I saw somewhere online that GRATITUDE should work through 7/31. ~Craig

    Hi Craig,

Question on the Bravo app just in general. Any idea if they send 1099s after receiving a certain amount on account?

Hi Michael – Great question. We have not received any 1099s from Bravo, and we’ve certainly pushed through enough $ to trigger any reporting threshold if they had one. Thanks for reading, and good luck with using it! ~Craig

I just got a DOT reply from Bravo telling me that I’m a FRAUDSTER for GAMING the system by getting 5X points. They shut down my account and canceled all my upcoming Encores and Bravos and Churrnuchinos too. I filed a CFPB complaint against Citi but they said they had nothing to do with it, it was all Bravo. Must have been the account I made in Bubbles name. Poor Bubbles, may she rest in soap.
